Building Habits

If you keep on waiting for the perfect moment, you will be waiting for the rest of your life.

While I was doing some reading, I came across this article that talked about what it meant to be an abstainer versus what it meant to be a moderator. Like the name suggests, a moderator can practice things in moderation. They can have a little of something without feeling the need to over-consume. An abstainer on the other hand is described as an all-or-nothing kind of person. As it relates to finances, moderators tend to perform better. An abstainer in the wrong environment might fall victim to their own shortcomings. The biggest point that I took from the article is how being aware can help to mitigate the negative consequences of being that “all-in” kind of person. If you are aware of the kind of environments that will cause you to over-indulge, work on limiting how many times you are in that environment and (if you have to) how much time you spend in that environment. It is also good to have someone that can hold you accountable so that you can reach your goals. Teamwork makes the dream work. If you want to look at more on this you can find the link at the bottom where Gretchen Rubin talks about the idea of moderators and abstainers.

In another article I looked at, the topic of discussion was “dressing for success”. There was a study at Princeton and the researchers wanted to know if the clothes that someone wore had an effect on how they were viewed from a perspective of trustworthiness and competence. The results were that those who were dressed more formal were looked at better than those who were not. Remember that before you even open your mouth to speak, you are being judged by your appearance. It is a good practice to always “look the part” so that you can always be prepared should the situation present itself. Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready!

The last thing I want to talk to you about can be described as the dichotomy of control. The dichotomy of control is fancy talk for having control over your thoughts, actions, and judgements and not so much over what are not your thoughts, actions, and judgements. You have control over how you choose to spend your money. You know the difference between something that you need and something that brings short-term pleasure. You can do your best to predict whether that stock will go up, but there is no way of truly knowing which way it will go. Short term sacrifice; long term benefits.

Be sure to let me know what topics you would like covered as well as what material

you are looking at on your own. As always, thank you for reading and stay blessed.
